Harris County Universal Services (HCUS) Fleet Services division has once again been recognized among the nation’s top sustainable fleets.  HCUS earned the No. 21 ranking in the 2026 Green Fleet Awards competition, a 23-position jump from No. 44 last year.   Fleet Services also received special recognition by NAFA Fleet Management Association as NAFA’s 2026 Best Problem-Solving Fleet.

The annual Green Fleet Awards recognize organizations demonstrating outstanding fleet sustainability efforts and implementing innovative programs and practices that positively impact the environment.

Fleet Services operates and manages a diverse fleet including light-duty sedans, SUVs, police patrol units, pickup trucks and cargo vans.  The mix of hybrid and electric vehicles supports critical County services ranging from daily administrative operations and field inspections to law enforcement patrol, site visits, pollution control and specialty operations.

The rise in this year’s Green Fleet ranking reflects continued progress under the HCUS Future Fleet Goal, a component of the department’s 2024-2027 strategic plan.

The goal concentrates on the County’s future fleet, with the goal of integrating mobility technologies to improve cost effectiveness and environmental conditions. Future fleet also champions:

• Climate adaptation, resilience and mitigation strategies, including the expansion of EV infrastructure.

• Reducing environmental impact through sustainable fleet practices.

• Positioning Harris County as a sustainable and livable county.

“Moving from No. 44 to No. 21 in just one year demonstrates the tremendous progress our Fleet Services team continues to make,” said Sindhu Menon, Chief Information Officer and Executive Director of Harris County Universal Services. “Being recognized as the Best Problem-Solving Fleet makes this achievement even more meaningful because it speaks directly to this team’s impactful work in finding smart, practical solutions that improve operations and better serve Harris County. I am incredibly proud of their commitment to innovation, sustainability and continuous improvement.”

Fleet Services Director Tommy Ward credited the recognition to the team’s continued focus on strengthening and modernizing County fleet operations.

“This recognition is a direct reflection of the work our Fleet team has put into improving operations, finding practical solutions to complex challenges, and continuing to move Harris County Fleet Services forward,” said Ward. “I am extremely proud of the team and appreciate the support Director Menon and our executive leadership have provided as we work to strengthen and modernize Fleet operations.”
